A total newbie, she\u2019s fascinated by the culture and convinces a legendary player to be her mentor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While she thinks she\u2019s going to be learning a card game, it turns out to be a voyage of self-discovery. The book got Kim thinking about the connection between poker and trading.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Kim observes, in many places in the book, it\u2019s as if you could remove the word \u2018poker\u2019 and simply put \u2018trading\u2019 in its place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She started to wonder \u2026 could past poker experience inform one\u2019s trading?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases.)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s the Connection Between Trading and Poker?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Stephen notes, this topic couldn\u2019t be more timely. He recently started a poker group with several fellow traders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So \u2026 are traders any good at poker? Who won the game? Stephen\u2019s not gonna tell (but yeah, he totally won.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As he observes, there are two key reasons why people exit the world of poker:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s too difficult.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They were being thrown out of casinos.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Could it be that day trading is a natural progression because it speaks to the same adrenaline-pumping risk-and-reward cycle?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Is Trading Like Poker?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Stephen, \u201cTrading and poker are pretty much identical \u2026 but with one big side path.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two endeavors have an awful lot in common.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, in your first year at either, you\u2019re being swung in all directions. You don\u2019t necessarily know if what you\u2019re doing is working or if you\u2019re just lucky.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But after a year or two, you start to see patterns emerge and figure out what actually works.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One big difference? With poker, you don\u2019t necessarily see the final hand. With trading, you get to see the aftermath.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it All Just Gambling?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ideally, neither trading nor poker should be mere gambling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With both, you want a calculated edge that you can use to play the system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a combination of experience and skill \u2026 but even so, there is the element of luck.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a maddening truth with both trading and poker: even if you do everything right like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.steadytrade.com\/ep-169-tracking-data-asking-questions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tracking data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and having a plan, things can still go wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And even if you do everything wrong, you can still win big sometimes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How can traders deal with this truth? Tune in as Kim and Stephen discuss&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Did Poker Teach Stephen About Trading?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Stephen shares, his history in poker has helped him a lot as a trader.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, it helped him keep his wits about him after a big loss. Another benefit? Honing the ability to gather information from other people and use it to your advantage when it\u2019s your turn to play.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He\u2019s also willing to let things go if the odds aren\u2019t in his favor. If he misses a stock, he doesn\u2019t feel much FOMO: \u201cYou don\u2019t lose by missing it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So \u2026 should people study poker to become traders? Not necessarily. Stephen says it\u2019s like speaking Spanish vs. Portuguese. They\u2019re both hard enough to learn in the first place and not instantly interchangeable.
