A few weeks ago, the SteadyTrade Podcast featured Jane Gallina, aka \u201cAirplane Jane.\u201d (Psst: Did you miss the interview? <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.steadytrade.com\/ep-153-airplane-jane\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check it out here.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) Following the episode, co-host Kim Ann Curtin checked out <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/37SMYNx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jane\u2019s book<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about awesome female traders, and that\u2019s how she discovered trader Latoya Smith.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, Latoya joins Kim and co-host Stephen Johnson. Latoya is a gap trader who likes to approach trading with as little stress as possible. Discover how she finds stocks and trades and how she\u2019s found success in the market \u2014 all while raising young children.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latoya Smith\u2019s Story<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latoya comes from a finance background. She studied finance in college, and after she finished school, she wanted to put her degree to work. She worked with a custodial bank but found herself thinking there had to be some other option.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2006, she formed an investment club with friends. As a group, they\u2019d choose stocks to trade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the treasurer, Latoya was the one who actually placed the trades. Over time, she started to notice that some of the price fluctuations could result in higher profits if they held positions for shorter time periods &#8230; That kicked off of her fascination with the stock market\u2019s mechanics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She started seeking out an education, and that\u2019s how she found <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.steadytrade.com\/trading-syke-ology-with-tim-sykes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tim Sykes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Like many of Sykes\u2019 students (including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.steadytrade.com\/consistent-trader\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stephen!<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), she started out wary. But she was interested enough to check out his program. She immersed herself in the world of small-cap stocks and got into short-term trading.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t miss Latoya\u2019s incredible story of trading self-discovery \u2026 Like any trader\u2019s journey, it includes the bumps along the way. But there was also a brief foray into real estate. She wanted a happy place, she wanted her time back, she wanted to have kids \u2026 In short, she was after a different kind of life, and she thought she might find it in trading.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What about being a woman trader? No matter what gender you identify with, you won\u2019t want to miss her uplifting and refreshing thoughts on why she never had reservations about being a woman trader in a male-dominated field!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She also explains how her strategy has evolved. She was making good money with small-caps, but it can be hard to control losses. It\u2019s easy to lose money fast. And it can all boil down to a single press release.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She figured there had to be something more controlled. That eventually led her to her current strategy of trading mid- to large-cap stocks based on momentum.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These days, Latoya has \u201cmuch more controlled risk\u201d thanks to trading gaps. She bases trades on upcoming earnings or earnings reports, going in the direction of the gap. For example, a stock might gap up on earnings \u2014 and then it might be a good short into the fade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latoya\u2019s transition of strategies wasn\u2019t easy, though. She shares how at one point, she took time off from trading for three months to actually observe the market and perfect her methods.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She also talks about how she approaches the market on an up day, a down day, or a sideways day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Best of all? She does it all in the morning.
